COUPLER LIFT ASSIST DEVICES (CLAD’s) SUCCESSFULLY EVALUATED UNDER EI 1576 PROTOCOL
As required by JIG standards, a pit coupler lift-assist device (CLAD) shall only be used where the hydrant pit coupler manufacturer has provided written confirmation for the use of the specific model of CLAD in conjunction with its model of hydrant pit coupler as a combined unit, in accordance with EI 1576 – Hydrant pit coupler lift assist device testing protocol.
This confirmation may be based upon physical testing of the CLAD / coupler combination in accordance with the standard test protocol defined in section 3, or (in the case of CLADs which require disconnection from the pit coupler during fuelling operations) may be based upon an engineering assessment by which the coupler manufacturer satisfies itself that the CLAD will not interfere with the EI1584 break-away characteristics as outlined in section 1.2.
The following table lists the coupler / CLAD combinations for which the hydrant pit coupler manufacturers have confirmed that they have successfully evaluated according to the requirements of EI 1576, thereby confirming that the combination (when used and maintained in accordance with the manufacturers requirements) meets the EI 1584 break-away requirements.
Coupler / Manufacturer & Model |
CLAD |
CLA-VAL (353GF – 3) | CLA-VAL supplied CLAD |
Titan EZ PIT CLAD | |
EATON CARTER® (648xx and 649xx series) | Refuel International Crocodile Input Coupler Lift Assist Device |
The following table lists the coupler / CLAD combination that in accordance with the standard operating procedures, are required to be decoupled from the hydrant pit coupler during fuelling operations. Therefore, the pit coupler manufacturers confirmation that it’s use will not interfere with the emergency breakaway requirements specified in EI 1584 4th edition is limited to when the CLAD has been decoupled from the hydrant pit coupler.
Coupler / Manufacturer & Model |
CLAD |
CLA-VAL (353GF – 3) | Vimasol-Aerofuel CLAMP-CLAD |

Any operation utilising this CLAD shall ensure that the local operating procedures clearly require the CLAD to be decoupled from the hydrant pit coupler before fuel flow commences, and consideration should be given to installing a device to only allow fuel flow after the CLAD is disconnected.
